Setting general preferences in Safari
The General preferences pane lets you choose some common browser options: your default web browser and home page, what to display in new windows, how to handle downloaded files, and how to display links from other applications.
- The Default Web Browser pop-up menu lets you choose which browser is launched when you click a link in a document, such as a Mail message, or double-click a Web Internet Location file in the Finder.
- The "New windows open with" pop-up menu lets you choose what appears when you start Safari or open a new window: your home page, bookmarks, or a blank page.
- The "Home page" field specifies what page appears when you choose History > Home or, optionally, when you open a new window.
- The "Save downloaded files to " pop-up menu lets you choose where downloaded files appear. The Remove download list items" pop-up menu lets you choose when items are removed from the Downloads window. "Open 'safe' files after downloading" lets you choose whether Safari should automatically open some files after downloading them.
- The "Open links from applications" options let you choose what happens when you click in a link in an application such as Mail or iChat. Safari can open a new window for the link or replace the contents of the current window with the link's contents. If you've enabled tabbed browsing, Safari can also open a new tab for the link
