Downloading files

Safari makes it easy to download files from the Internet.

Click the link to download a file. The Downloads window shows the progress of the download.

If you don't see the Downloads window, choose Downloads from the Window menu.

To stop downloading a file, click the icon to the right of the filename in the Downloads window. To resume downloading the file, click the icon next to its name. If you don't want to finish downloading the file, click Clear to remove the item from the Downloads window and delete the downloaded file in the Finder.

To see a downloaded file in the Finder, click the magnifying glass next to the filename in the Downloads window.

If you download a disk image, MacBinary, BinHex, or gzip format file, Safari decompresses the file automatically. If the file contains an installer, Safari opens the installer for you.

If you download a disk image file, Safari decompresses the file and mounts the disk image volume. If the file contains an installer, Safari opens the installer for you.

If you download an Internet Disk Image, Safari decompresses the file. If the file contains an installer, Safari opens the installer for you. Safari then moves the disk image to the Trash. If you want to keep the disk image, drag it out of the Trash.

If you select the option to open "safe" files when they download (in the General pane of Safari preferences), the file will open, if it's safe. Safe files include documents such as pictures, movies, and sounds, PDF and text documents, and disk images and other archives.

To clear the Downloads window, click the Clear button in the window. You can also set when Safari removes items from the Downloads window by using the General pane of Safari preferences.

Safari downloads files to the location specified in the General pane of Safari preferences. To select a new location, choose Other from the "Save downloaded files to" pop-up menu.
